Today i am gonna show you how to create your very own website done in less than 10minutes. We will be using a CMS to create your website. Think of CMS like a website with has a front end which your viewers see and a backend through which you can manage your frontend. Hopefully that makes sense.

But why setup your own website? Well first it is important these days to make your online presence and connect yourself with others. Now create websites for your portfolio site, school site or even for a dance group with ease. Do not let the jargons intimidate you. If you don’t understand them please ask questions in the comment area for me to explain more.

With these tips I am sure you can create and setup your website with great speed.

Problem

When we code with a server side language like php or asp.net we require to setup a localhost in our computer so that we can code and test the files locally. Alternatively we can also buy a server space and upload the files there and check them but updating the files each time and waiting for response may become a headache. So it becomes always necessary to setup a localhost.

OLD Solution

Previously this was done by activating IIS that comes with Windows. But this process of activating IIS and setting up a local server is a very tedious process.

Better Solution

Apachefriends.org have released a free program call XAMPP to do this easy for webdesigners like us. You can download the latest version here . They offer this program for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and Solaris. This provides easy solution for setting up your localhost.

Installation

Once you have downloaded the latest version just install it. At the end of the installation you will be asked to start ‘XAMPP Control Panel’. Say ‘YES’ and this is where you activate the services you need. Usually you will need to start ‘Apache’ to activate local host and ‘MySql’ if you are using a MySql database. Truly this is all that you have to do setup your local host.

Testing

You can check if it has correctly installed by opening any browser and in the address bar type ‘localhost’. You should get a page with XAMPP logo on it. Then it is successful. You have successfully setup your localhost.

Work with it

You need to place your work files inside the folder called ‘htdocs’ for it be recognized by localhost. You can find this folder inside your installation destination. By default it is at ‘C:/Xampp/htdocs’. For eg: if you are copying a folder named ‘website’ there then your location should be ‘C:/Xampp/htdocs/website’. The way you can access this folder in a browser is ‘http://localhost/website’. And it will act like a website that you would see off the internet.

(Tip: Installing ‘Apache’ and ‘MySql’ as a service during installation will activate it automcatically when your computer boots up. Then you will never need to use ‘XAMPP Control Panel’ to activate it everytime. This option is useful if you work with localhost everyday. )
